First, I’m not G-Shock collector junkie, but I’ve owned a bunch of tough rugged G-Shock watches laying around in my watch boxes and most of them is one of best g-shock watches for military in black color or with camouflage style. Today, I’m lucky enough to have a big Red G-Shock GD-400-4DR.
The G-Shock GD-400 appeared first in July 2014 in Japan and followed a month later in the rest of the world. The first versions of this model are black, greenish blue and this red model. There are also a green and a yellowish brown model.
When I saw the GD-400 series for the first time, I’m totally in love with this watch. It’s quite a hard choice for me to buy the right one. First I was thinking about the black military version, either GD-400-1 with negative display or Military Black GD-400MB, but finally I decided to go with Red GD-400-4 series. To be honest, this is my first Red Color G-Shock theme I ever bought.
Initial impressions
This G-Shock GD-400 look pretty much like my GD-350 series. Although the size of the GD-400 is seem larger than the GD-350, it actually doesn’t look real big or too big to my wrist. This makes this watch probably suitable for most wrist sizes.
I thing the “eye-catching” thing about G-Shock GD-400-4DR is the Red coloring of the wrist strap, as well as the fire engine red accents that dot the face. It’s a very attractive watch, and certainly one that you aren’t going to run the risk of losing anywhere anytime soon.
Bull Bars Face Protectors
The very first thing that I noticed about the new Casio G-Shock GD-400-4DR is that it has a very premium feel about it without compromising the traditional G-Shock aesthetics with this Face Protector.
G-Shock GD-400 The face protectors – nickname “Bull Bars”.
This steel frame is made of a quite thick diameter steel wire. It is perfectly shaped that it fits above, below and under the button guards, which hold it nicely in place. The face protectors are also generally known by the nickname “Bull Bars“.
After all, this is an iconic timepiece we’re talking about here, and maybe the most recognizable digital watch on the planet today. The same standard layout of time, date, and timekeeping/time tracking functions are all clearly laid out right on the face of the watch, and the simple control system remains unchanged since the early 90’s.

The Features
Timekeeping has always been important for Casio G-Shock, and their digital watches are some of the most accurate on the market today, this watch is no different. The GD-400 comes with the new 3434 module and this watch has quite an improved number of features.
Not only does it come with the traditional 24 hour/12 hour clock, but it also includes stopwatch functionality, calendar functionality, multi-time (four cities in four time zones) keeping capabilities, five daily alarms, and a “flash alert” system that you’ll be able to program with just a few taps of the four buttons mounted on the side of the face of this watch.
Anytime you’re talking about a G-Shock watch you’re looking at one of the most indestructible watches known to man, and the Casio G-Shock GD400-4DR has definitely been put through the paces by me – most of it accidental, but some of it intentional just to see how durable this G-Shock really is.
I was not disappointed.
Waterproof up to 200m, it’s shock resistant up to at least four stories (that’s the highest window I could drop it out of), and it sloughed off daily wear and tear like it was bulletproof. I certainly put it through its paces, doing absolutely everything and it handled everything I threw at it without breaking a sweat.
- Legendary G-Shock reputation is protected with the Casio G-Shock GD-400-4DR.
- If you like classic vintage looking watch with “Bull Bar”, GD-400-4 is definitely for you. Look awesome!
- Superbright LED backlight makes timekeeping easy in any light condition.
- Multiple alarms and multiple time zones make this a dream for travelers.
- The four button control scheme takes a little bit of time to get used to.
- This is a bit of a larger G-Shock and best suited to those with bigger wrists – or those that don’t mind wearing “chunky” watch.
- It’s not the cheapest (or the most expensive) G-Shock on the market today
Final Verdict
At the end of the day, I cannot tell you how pleased I am with my Red G-Shock GD-400-4DR. I think I’m already told you in this article why I love this model so much. I’ve never been let down by a Casio G-Shock . Somehow, someway, G-Shock continues to put out the most durable watches – as close to indestructible as I imagine it gets – year after year for more than 30 years.
Whether I’m headed out to do a bit of hiking, climbing, or just hitting the urban jungle, the odds are pretty good that I have a Casio G-Shock strapped to my wrist. And now that I finally took the plunge and grabbed one of their awesome models – the Casio G-Shock GD-400-4DR.
It lives up to each and every one of my expectations for what a G-Shock watch is supposed to be, and I can’t imagine this not becoming part of my permanent wristwatch rotation from here on out. I really, really love this watch – and I think you will as well!
Came across your site in my search for GD-400 reviews. I like how this line looks, none of the color schemes look out of place with the bezel design, unlike certain previous models. These two (GD-400 along with GD-350) might well be the next 7900 as in the best basic G-Shock for the 2010s. Very well written summary and nice photos.
Thanks George. 🙂
